Heavyweights Sweep Sunday Slate of Racing

May 3, 2015

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- In the program's final tune up before postseason action begins with the EARC Sprints in two weeks, the Navy heavyweight rowing team went four-for-four on Sunday in a three-team meet versus Hobart and George Washington. The Mids won all four races by a minimum of three seconds on Mercer Lake's 2,000-meter course.

"I thought all the boats raced well today, especially since we are in the middle of final exams," remarked head coach Rob Friedrich. "It's been a hard week of training, but once final exams are over, we will be able to get rested and focus all of our attention on the Eastern Sprints."

In the first varsity eight race, Navy earned a substantial victory of 7.51 seconds over Hobart and 9.97 seconds over George Washington. The Mids clocked in at 5:45.60, while the Statesmen finished the course at 5:53.11 and the Colonials at 5:55.57.

In the closest competition of the four-race slate, Navy's second varsity eight boat held off Hobart, 6:01.00 to 6:04.20 for the 3.2-second victory.

The Mids and Colonials went one-two in the final two races, the third varsity and fourth varsity eight events. In the 3V8 competition, Navy came out on top by 6.13 seconds at 6:07.5 to 6:13.63. In the 4V8 race, the Colonials made it a little tighter as the Mids won by 4.37 seconds at 6:14.90 to 6:19.27.

Navy will next be in action on Sunday, May 17 with racing at the EARC Sprints in Worcester, Mass.
