Final Midweek Contest Features Navy Traveling to George Mason

Navy takes on George Mason in Fairfax, Va., on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy baseball team (30-14) has just one midweek contest left on its schedule this season as it travels to George Mason (15-23) on Wednesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. start at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
 
The Midshipmen come into the week after dropping its first Patriot League weekend series of the season to Army. Navy dropped two of three games to its service academy rival this past weekend. The Midshipmen posted a 3-2 record last week winning three-straight games. Navy upended Georgetown, 17-3, and Bucknell, 3-1, in the midweek and started the series against the Black Knights with a 3-0 victory. However, Navy lost the final two games of the weekend series to Army to finish off the week.
 
On offense, Navy is hitting .276 as a team with the freshman pair of Zach Stevens and Joe Simourian leading the way. Stevens it hitting a Patriot League-best .357 at the plate and he has a .571 slugging percentage. Simourian has a .321 average and drove in three of Navy's five runs on Sunday against Army. Christian Hodge has led the Midshipmen with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs, which both lead the Patriot League and Zach Biggers has 53 hits to pace the league.
 
Noah Song has guided Navy's pitching staff with a 1.36 ERA with an 8-0 record in 10 starts this season. Song, who was named the National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, leads the country with 118 strikeouts and is allowing opponents to hit just .158 against him. As a staff, Navy has a 4.07 ERA and has struck out 404 batters in 2019 while allowing the opposition to hit .240 overall.
 
George Mason comes into the week with a 15-23 record and plays William & Mary on Tuesday afternoon before hosting Navy. This past weekend, the Patriots dropped two of three games at home to Dayton. As a team George Mason is hitting .249 and have an on-base mark of .363. Logan Driscoll has been the offensive leader for the Patriots this season with a .346 average -- which is the only average on the team over .300 -- and he also reaches base at a .479 clip.
 
The pitching staff for George Mason has a 6.94 ERA and an opponent batting average of .299. The Patriot closer James Beasley has paced the pitching staff with a 3.12 ERA and four saves in 11 appearances. Patrick Halligan leads George Mason on the mound with three victories in eight starts.
 
The last time Navy and George Mason met was in the 2017 season when the Midshipmen grabbed an 11-2 win at home over the Patriots. Navy scored four runs in the first inning and had the first 11 runs in the game before George Mason tallied a pair of runs in the ninth inning to spoil the shutout.
 
In the all-time series between the Midshipmen and Patriots, Navy holds a record of 18-14 over George Mason and has won the last two meetings.
 
First pitch on Wednesday afternoon is set for 3 p.m. as the Midshipmen round out their midweek schedule against George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
