ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced Tuesday that Navy would not add an 11th game this year. The Mids were scheduled to play at Northwestern Sept. 15, but the game was cancelled due to the terrorist attacks on America, which took place Sept. 11.

"We are not interested in playing an extra football game Nov. 3," said Vice Admiral John Ryan, Superintendent of the Naval Academy. "We have made this decision in light of the mission of the Naval Academy. The open date was scheduled so that our scholar-athletes could take full advantage of the Academy's educational opportunities. That is still our goal."

"In the final analysis, scheduling a contest on Nov. 3, at the end of a critical exam week for the midshipmen, was not appropriate," said Gladchuk. "At years end, we will place an asterisk next to the 2001 season reminding all that this has been a difficult fall for many reasons."
