Mids Look To Break Two Losing Streaks

The Navy Midshipmen travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on the Notre

Dame Fighting Irish Saturday. Kickoff is 2:30 (EST) p.m. and the game will

be televised live by NBC. Tom Hammond will call the play-by-play and Pat

Haden will handle the color commentary. Jim Gray will be the sideline

reporter. The game is a sellout (80,795).

The Mids enter Saturday's contest looking to end two streaks- an

eight-game losing streak overall and a 37-game losing streak to Notre Dame,

an NCAA record for consecutive losses to one opponent.

Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the 10-station Navy Radio

Network, including 1300 WJFK in Baltimore, 630 WMAL in Washington and 1430

WNAV in Annapolis. You can also hear the broadcast live on the internet at

Bob Socci will call the play-by-play and Ron Wolf will handle the color

commentary.

The game will also be broadcast nationally on the radio via Westwood

Allen Pinkett will handle the color analysis. Former Heisman Trophy winner

Paul Hornung will provide the pregame and halftime analysis.

Injuries

Offensive guard Brett Cochrane (Jr./Houston, Texas) is doubtful with

turf toe on his right toe. Linebacker Jake Bowen (Sr./Asheville, N.C.) is

doubtful with a sprained left foot. Fullback Raheem Lambert (Sr./Riverside,

Calif.) is doubtful with a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.

Sophomore Ralph Henry (Baltimore, Md.) is doubtful with a torn MCL in his

left knee. Linebacker Eddie Carthan (So./Donalsville, Ga.) is out for the

year after having surgery on his left toe because of turf toe.

Series History

Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 64-9-1, and has won an NCAA-record

37-straight games against the Mids. The Irish won last year's contest,

45-14, at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Navy's last win over the Irish was in

1963, 35-14, in South Bend. Roger Staubauch went on to win the Heisman

Trophy that year.

This is the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in the country, as

this will be the 75th-consecutive meeting between the two schools.

Though the Mids have lost 37 straight to the Irish, Navy has played

Notre Dame especially tough the last three games in South Bend.

In 1999, Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.), making the first start of his

career, rushed for 168 yards and one touchdown as Navy lost to Notre Dame,

28-24. The Midshipmen appeared to have Notre Dame stopped on a fourth-down

play with 1:30 left, but a questionable spot by the line judge gave Notre

Dame a first down and the Irish scored six plays later.

In 1997, Navy outgained the Irish, 399-283, but turned it over three

times and lost, 21-17. Quarterback Chris McCoy rushed for 147 yards and two

touchdowns and threw for 122 yards in the game.

In 1995, Navy outgained the Irish, 433-319, as quarterback

Ben Fay threw for 231 yards, but five second-half turnovers turned a 17-14

Navy lead into a 35-17 Irish win. The Mids had three touchdowns called back

in that game because of penalties, though Navy eventually scored a touchdown

after one of them. The game changed when Navy linebacker Fernando Harris

knocked quarterback Ron Powlus out of the game in the third quarter and

backup quarterback Tom Krug came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes

for the Irish.

Scouting Notre Dame

Notre Dame's season has been one of ups and downs, as the Irish lost

their first three, won three straight and have now lost two in a row.

Quarterback Carlyle Holiday is Notre Dame's leading rusher, rushing for

502 yards and two touchdowns. He has completed 59 of his 102 passes (.578)

for 612 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions. Notre Dame has two

dangerous receivers in Javin Hunter (32 catches for 258 yards and one

touchdown) and David Givens (32 catches for 309 yards).

Notre Dame is averaging 178.2 yards per game on the ground (34th in the

country) and 113.0 yards per game through the air (114th in the country) for

a total offense average of 291.3 (109th) yards per game. The Irish are

averaging 17.9 points per contest (105th in the country).

Linebacker Tyreo Harrison leads the defense with 70 tackles, while

defensive end Anthony Weaver has recorded a team-high 13 tackles for a loss

and four sacks.

Defensive backs Abram Elam and Vontez Duff lead ND with two

interceptions apiece.

Notre Dame has been tough all year on defense, giving up just 125.6

yards per game on the ground (32nd in the country) and 169.9 yards per game

through the air (10th in the country) for a total offense allowed of 295.5

(12th in the country). Notre Dame is giving up just 20.5 points per contest

(25th in the country).

Tulane Hands Navy Its Eighth-Straight Loss

Tulane outscored Navy, 35-7, in the first and third quarters as the Mids

dropped to 0-8 on the year with a 42-28 loss to the Green Wave.

Green Wave quarterback Patrick Ramsey picked the Mids apart, throwing

for a Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium record 442 yards and three

touchdowns, while Mewelde Moore rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns and

had 130 yards in receiving.

Navy fell behind 21-0 right out of the gate, as Tulane scored on its

first-three possessions. Moore scored on an 11-yard run, Ramsey hit Roydell

Williams (5 catches, 134 yards, three touchdowns) with a 35-yard touchdown

pass and then Moore scored again on a three-yard run 28 seconds into the

second quarter.

To Navy's credit, the Mids didn't pack it in, battling back to cut the

lead to 21-14 at the half.

Quarterback Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.), who had another

sensational day running the ball, rushing for a career-high 201 yards and a

career-high tying three touchdowns, scored on a 43-yard run to make it 21-7.

Madden came back on Navy's next possession and scored on a one-yard sneak

with 24 seconds left in the half to make it 21-14.

Tulane, though, grabbed the momentum right back as it took the opening

drive and march 80 yards on eight plays as Ramsey hit Williams with a

10-yard touchdown pass.

Navy looked like it would answer as Madden drove Navy from the Tulane 35

down to the four, but on first-and-goal, Madden was stripped of the ball and

Tulane's Roxie Shelvin recovered. Five plays later, Ramsey hit Williams

with a 62-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-14.

Tulane put the game away on the next possession, as Lynar Elpheage

intercepted a Madden pass and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown.

The Mids tried to get back in the game when Madden hit Tony Lane

(So./Wrens, Ga.) with a 37-yard touchdown pass as Lane broke two tackles,

and then Madden scored on a 22-yard run with 7:47 remaining, but the Mids

failed to score on its final-three drives.

Madden collected 201 of Navy's 300 yards rushing. Marlon Terrell

(Sr./Dallas, Texas) rushed for 40 yards.

Madden had his worst day as a Navy quarterback throwing the ball,

completing just 10-of-32 passes for 113 yards with one touchdown and two

interceptions. Jeff Gaddy (Sr./Charlotte, N.C.) led the Navy receiving

corps with four catches for 24 yards.

Lenter Thomas (Jr./Eagle Lake, Texas) led the Mids with 13 tackles,

while Clyde Clark (Jr./Austin, Texas) recorded 10 stops and broke up a pass.

Pete Beuttenmuller (Jr./Wellington, Fla.) and Ryan Hamilton (Sr./Havertown,

Pa.) forced fumbles, while DeJuan Cromer (Sr./Dallas, Texas) and Kevin

Schwind (So./Fairfax, Va.) recovered fumbles. Paul Clarkson (So./Oconomoc,

Wisc.) intercepted his first-career pass.

Navy-Tulane Notes

Tulane leads the all-time series, 9-5-1 ... the Green Wave have won

three of the last four ... Navy has been outscored 174-59 in the first half

this year ... Navy set season highs in rushing attempts (56), pass attempts

(34), rushing yardage (300), rushing touchdowns (3), total plays (90), first

downs (24) and points (28) ... the 300 yards rushing was the first 300-yard

rushing day by Navy since last year's Army-Navy game when the Mids rushed

for 300 yards ... Gene Reese's (Jr./Jacksonville, Fla.) 26-yard punt return

was the longest punt return of the season for the Mids, bettering Mike

McIlravy's (Jr./Virginia Beach, Va.) long of 10 yards against Boston College

... DeJuan Cromer's (Sr./Dallas, Texas) fumble recovery in the second

quarter was the first of his career ... Kevin Schwind's (So./Fairfax, Va.)

fumble recovery with 6:44 left in the fourth quarter was the first of his

career ... Tulane's Roydell Williams tied the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial

Stadium record for touchdown receptions with three ... he shares the honor

with four others, though just one other Navy opponent ... Colgate's Corey

Hill caught three touchdowns against the Mids in 1998 ... Lynaris Elpheage's

interception return for a touchdown was the first interception return for a

touchdown against Navy since Oct. 12, 1996, when Stephen Pipes of Air Force

returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown in Navy's 20-17 victory

over the Falcons.

Notre Dame-Navy Connections

Navy interim head coach Rick Lantz was the defensive line coach at Notre

Dame for the 1984 and 1985 seasons.

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers spent eight seasons at

Navy coaching the tight ends and offensive tackles (1983), tight ends and

receivers (1984-85), defensive backs (1986), running backs (1987-88) and

quarterbacks (1989-90).

Navy strength coach Kirk Wookfolk was Notre Dame's strength and

conditioning coordinator for three years (1995-98)

Close Calls

Navy has been unable to win close games, losing 12 of the last 14 games

decided by seven points or less. The Mids are 0-3 in nailbiters this year,

losing to Air Force, 24-18, Rutgers, 23-17, and Toledo, 21-20.

The Madden File

Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.) rushed for a career-high 201 yards and

a career-high tying three touchdowns in Navy's 42-28 loss to Tulane, running

his 100-yard rushing games total to 10 in 11-career starts. The only game

Madden started and did not rush for 100 yards was Oct. 13 of this year when

Rice held him to 94 yards on 34 carries, snapping a school-record streak of

seven-consecutive 100-yard rushing days.

His 10 100-yard rushing games are the second most in school history for

a quarterback. Only Chris McCoy (1995-97) with 15 has more.

After being held out of the end zone against Rutgers, snapping a streak

of eight-consecutive games with a rushing touchdown, Madden came back to

score a rushing touchdown against Toledo and three against Tulane. He has

had at least one rushing touchdown in 10 of his 11-career starts.

Madden is 12th in the nation in rushing, averaging 126.7 yards per game,

and is the No. 1 rusher in the nation among quarterbacks (Madden led the

nation in rushing among quarterbacks in 1999, rushing for 897 yards (99.7

yards per game). Madden is also 24th in the nation in total offense (252.5)

Madden needs just 11 yards rushing in the final-two games to pass Jason

Van Matre and Bob Jackson and move into ninth place on Navy's all-time

rushing list. Madden needs 63 more yards to pass Brian Broadwater for

eighth place, 88 yards to pass Chuck Smith for seventh place and 234 yards

to pass Joe Gattuso Jr., for sixth place.

Madden has accomplished this

despite starting just 11 games in his career.

Madden is also just 139 yards away from passing Cleveland Cooper for

10th on the Navy single-season rushing list. He is also within striking

distance of Chuck Smith (154 more yards to move into ninth place), Eddie

Meyers (198 more yards to move into eighth place) and Cleveland Cooper (287

more yards to move into seventh place).

Madden has thrown for more than 100 yards in five of his six starts this

year, after not throwing for 100 yards in any of his five starts in 1999.

Gaddy Coming Up With Big Plays

Jeff Gaddy (Sr./Davidson, N.C.) had a big day against Boston College,

catching two passes for 87 yards and his first-career touchdown. The

touchdown catch came on Navy's first drive, a 49-yard strike from

quarterback Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.). He came back

against Air Force and caught four passes for 52 yards in Navy's loss to the

Falcons. Against Rutgers, Gaddy caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Madden

and against Toledo, he caught three passes for 62 yards.

Gaddy is Navy's leading receiver in catches (20) and yards (320).

A Dangerous Lane

Tony Lane (So./Wrens, Ga.) set a school record for kickoff return

yardage against Temple, returning five kicks for 205 yards. The previous

record was 170 yards on seven returns set by Michael Jefferson in 1994.

Lane proved to be a threat the first time he ever touched the ball in a

college game, returning Temple's second kickoff of the game 67 yards,

setting up a Navy field goal. Lane's 41.0 average was also a school record.

The previous record was 38.5 yards, set by Pat McGrew in 1997. Navy also

set a school record for team kickoff return yardage against the Owls,

returning eight kicks for 247 yards. The previous record was 198 yards on

nine returns against Penn State in 1971.

Lane returned six kicks for 147 yards, including a long of 51 yards,

against Georgia Tech and returned three kicks for 73 yards against Boston

College. Against Air Force, he returned one kickoff for 25 yards and against

Rice he returned two kickoffs for 47 yards.

Against Rutgers, Lane

returned four kickoffs for 102 yards and against Toledo, Lane returned two

kickoffs for 56 yards. He returned twp kickoffs for 43 yards against

Tulane.

Averaging 27.9 yards per kickoff return, Lane is ranked 17th in the nation in kickoff returns.

Lane is also averaging 135 yards per game of all-purpose yards, whichranks 25th in the country.

Lane is more than a kickoff returner, scoring a rushing touchdown

against Boston College and then catching a 54-yard touchdown pass from Brian

Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.) against Air Force. Against Toledo, Lane rushed

for a career-high 91 yards on 11 carries and also caught two passes for 29

yards and one touchdown. He caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Madden

against Tulane.

Lane is third on the team in receptions with 12 and leads the team with three touchdown catches. Lane is also third on the team

in rushing yards with 150 yards.

Skaggs Impressive

Sophomore punter John Skaggs (Cantonment, Fla.) averaged a career-best

49.3 yards per punt on four punts in Navy's 24-18 loss to Air Force.

Skaggs has been impressive all year. He averaged 46 yards per punt on five

attempts in his collegiate debut against Temple, 40.8 yards on six kicks

against Georgia Tech, 48.8 yards per punt on four punts against Boston

College, 45.5 yards on four punts against Rice, 46 yards on five punts

against Rutgers and 47.7 yards (including a career-long 72 yarder) on six

punts against Tulane.

His only bad night was a 30.5 average on two punts against Toledo.

The All-America candidate is averaging 45.2 yards per punt, which is the second-best average in the country. He is on pace to shatter the

60-year-old school record of 43.8 yards, set by Bill Busik in 1941.

Hills Nearly Perfect On Field Goals

David Hills (Sr./Latham, N.Y.) has been almost perfect on field goals

this year, making nine out of 10 attempts.

He made both of his attempts against Temple (24 and 36), Air Force (23

and 37), Rice (40 and 43) and Toledo (42 and 30) and made one out of two

attempts against Rutgers (made from 27 and missed from 22).

Hills has made 18 of his 22-career attempts (.818). He is 0-1 from

inside the 20, 5-6 from 20-29 yards out, 7-8 from 30-39 yards and 8-9 from

40-49 yards. His career long is 45 yards, which he made in last year's game

at Air Force.

Terrell Stepping Up

Marlon Terrell (Sr./Dallas, Texas) is finally getting a chance to show

what he can do after battling a hamstring injury the last two years.

Terrell rushed for a career-high 79 yards in his first-career start

against Rutgers. He recorded career-long runs of 28 yards in the second

quarter and then 43 yards in the third quarter. He also scored on a

one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, his first rushing touchdown of

the season and the second of his career.

Terrell followed up his

performance against Rutgers with a 51-yard rushing day on nine carries

against Toledo.

Against Rice, Terrell caught his first-career pass, a Navy season-long

65 yarder from Madden.

Terrell is Navy's second leading rusher with 181 yards and one touchdown. He is also averaging a team best 28.3 yards per reception.

Red Zone

Navy has scored on 69.2 percent of its trips inside the 20 (18-26), with

11 of the 26 trips (.423) resulting in touchdowns.

The defense has given up points 26-of-32 times (.812) when the opposition reaches the end zone. Twenty two of the 32 trips have resulted in touchdowns (.688).

Problems Out Of The Gate

Navy has been outscored, 174-59 (21.8-7.4), in the first half of games.

The Mids have led just one game at the half-10-7 at Toledo.

They have given up 84 points in the first quarter and 90 points in the second quarter. Navy has scored just 26 first-quarter points and 33 second-quarter points.

It has regrouped and played much better in the second half, being outscored by

just an 110-91 count (13.8-11.4). The Mids have outscored the opposition, 60-41, in the fourth quarter.
