Defense Defeats Offense in Spring Game

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The Navy defense defeated the offense, 25-12, in the annual Blue-Gold scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The defense scored one point every time it stopped the offense from getting a first down in three plays and three points for every turnover it forced.

The defense held the offense to 405 yards of offense on 135 plays (3.0 yards per play). The offense ran the ball 67 times for 171 yards (2.6 yards per rush) and attempted 68 passes, completing 32, for 234 yards (3.4 yards per pass attempt).

Clyde Clark, Matt Brooks and Mike Chiesl led the defense with five tackles apiece. Dan Ryno had the defense's only interception.

Raheem Lambert, who looked good in limited playing time, led the Navy ground attack. Lambert carried the ball six times for 33 yards, including runs of 14 and 12 yards. Brad Tepper carried the ball five times for 22 yards.

Quarterback Ed Malinowski completed 21 of his 42 pass attempts for 156 yards, while Chris Maloney completed nine of his 17 attempts for 67 yards, including a six yard touchdown pass to Chris Rush for the only touchdown of the day. Mark Tedrow was the leading receiver, catching six passes for 33 yards. Mike McIlravy caught five passes for 53 yards. The offense also scored six points in the kicking game as David Hills kicked a 31-yard field goal and Eric Rolfs hit from 42 yards.

"The offense didn't perform real well today," said Weatherbie. "We have a lot of guys out on the offensive side of the football. We have a couple of quarterbacks out and a couple of other guys who didn't play that would have helped the offense, but the defense is playing great. I thought the defense played real well today, the defense has played real well all spring. Every great team that I have ever been associated with has had great defenses. If they can't score on you, they can't beat you."
