Navy To Play Host To Boston College
The Navy Midshipmen (0-2) play host to the Boston College Eagles (1-1) Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, kicking off at 12 noon.
Neither team played last Saturday, as Boston College was idle and Navy's game at Northwestern was cancelled due to the tragic events that took place on Tuesday along the East Coast.
Saturday is floppy hat day, sponsored by Coca-Cola. The first 5,000 fans will receive a free Navy floppy hat. Saturday's national anthem will be sung by MIDN 1/C Gary Roznovsky. Before the game, the Naval Academy will honor five distinguised graduates-The Honorable John W. Crawford Jr. '42, Adm. William J. Crowe Jr. '47, Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale '47, Adm. James D. Watkins '49, Capt. James A. Lovell Jr. '52.
At halftime, Dick Duden, who was a star end at the Naval Academy from 1943-45, will be honored for having been inducted into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Aug. 10 in South Bend, Ind. The Class of '51 will also make a presentation in honor of Robert Renneman Jr. '51, for his heroism during the Korean War.
The game will be broadcast live on the 10-station Navy Radio Network, including 1300 WJFK in Baltimore, 630 WMAL in Washington and 1430 WNAV in Annapolis. Series History
Boston College leads the all-time series, 15-11, including a 48-7 victory over the Mids last year in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Navy's last win over the Eagles was in 1998, 32-31, at BC. BC is 9-3 against Navy in games played in Annapolis. Navy last beat the Eagles in Annapolis in 1980, 21-0.

Navy Against The Big East
Navy is 58-73-4 (.444) all-time against the Big East, including a 6-9 mark (.400) under Charlie Weatherbie. The Mids have lost four straight to Big East opponents, including a 45-26 loss at Temple Aug. 30. Navy last defeated a Big East school Nov. 6, 1999, when the Mids won at Rutgers, 36-7.
Scouting Boston College
The Eagles defeated West Virginia, 34-10, in the opener and then lost at Stanford, 38-22, Sept. 8.
Offensively, the Eagles are led by running back William Green, who has rushed for 307 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games. Quarterback Brian St. Pierre has struggled throwing the ball, completing just 26 of his 64 pass attempts for 335 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Dedrick DeWalt is the leading receiver with seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, the Eagles are led by linebacker Vinny Ciurciu and strong safety Doug Bessette, who lead the team with 14 tackles apiece.
BC is averaging 227.5 yards per game on the ground and 174.0 yards through the air, while the BC defense is giving up 118.0 yards per game on the ground and 236.0 yards per game through the air.
Navy-Boston College Ties
Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk is a 1973 graduate of Boston College where he was a three-year letterwinner in football and graduated with honors in business management in 1973. Gladchuk came back to his alma mater in January of 1991 and served as Director of Athletics for seven years.
Boston College wide receiver Ryan Read played at Navy in 1997 and '98 and caught a game-winning 78-yard touchdown pass from Brian Broadwater in Navy's 32-31 upset of Boston College in 1998.
Boston College head coach Tom O'Brien is a 1971 graduate of the Naval Academy where he was a three-year starter at defensive end. O'Brien was also an assistant coach at Navy from 1975-81.
Eagles defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani was an assistant coach at the Naval Academy from 1975-81.
BC offensive line coach Dave Magazu was an assistant coach at Navy from 1987-89.
Injuries
Wide receiver Mark Tedrow (Jr./Charleroi, Pa.) is questionable with a broken left hand. Safety Marc Giorgi (Jr./Charleroi, Pa.) is questionable with a broken right arm. Defensive tackle Andy Zetts (Jr./Youngstown, Ohio) is questionable with a broken right foot. Offensive guard Brian Cochrane (Jr./Houston, Texas) is questionable with turf toe on his right toe. Slot back Gene Reese (Jr./Jacksonville, Fla) is questionable with a strained right hamstring.
Mids Fall To 0-2
George Godsey completed eight of his nine pass attempts for 158 yards and two touchdowns, while Sidney Ford rushed for 129 yards as Georgia Tech routed Navy, 70-7, in front of 30,602 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The 63-point margin marked the worst defeat in school history and the 70 points scored by Georgia Tech equalled the most points Navy has ever given up. Michigan scored 70 against the Mids Sept. 25, 1976, in a 70-14 win in Ann Arbor. The 70 points were also a Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium record. The previous record was 64 set by Navy Oct. 5, 1996, in a 64-27 victory over Duke.
Navy trailed 21-0 after the first quarter, 42-0 at the half and 56-0 at the end of three quarters. The Mids were hurt by five turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown and two others that set up easy Tech scores.
Raheem Lambert (Sr./Riverside, Calif.) scored Navy's only touchdown of the day on a one-yard run with 3:38 left in the game. It was Lambert's first touchdown since Nov. 20, 1999, when he scored against Hawai'i.
Acrobatic Andy
Junior Andy Zetts (Youngstown, Ohio) made a couple of big plays in the second quarter against Temple. He recorded his first-career interception with 7:57 left in the second quarter when he made a diving, one-handed catch. A little more than seven minutes later, Zetts hustled down on a punt and recovered his first-career fumble. Zetts did not play against Georgia Tech because of a stress fracture in his right foot suffered against Temple.
Candeto To Minter-First Of Many
Craig Candeto's (So./Orange City, Fla.) 39-yard touchdown pass to Marshaun Minter (Fr./South Euclid, Ohio) accomplished a number of firsts. The catch was Minter's first-career reception and first-career touchdown and it also marked Candeto's first-career touchdown pass and longest completion of his career.
Lane Sets School Record
Tony Lane (So./Wrens, Ga.) set a school record for kickoff return yardage against Temple, returning five kicks for 205 yards. The previous record was 170 yards on seven returns set by Michael Jefferson in 1994.
Lane proved to be a threat the first time he ever touched the ball in a college game, returning Temple's second kickoff of the game 67 yards, setting up a Navy field goal. Lane's 41.0 average was also a school record. The previous record was 38.5 yards, set by Pat McGrew in 1997.
Navy also set a school record for team kickoff return yardage, returning eight kicks for 247 yards. The previous record was 198 yards on nine returns against Penn State in 1971.
Lane returned six kicks for 147 yards (24.5 yards per return), including a long of 51 yards, against Georgia Tech.
Averaging 32.0 yards per kickoff return, Lane is ranked eighth in the nation in kickoff returns. He is also averaging 193.0 yards per game of all-purpose yards, which ranks sixth in the country.
Skaggs Impressive
Sophomore punter John Skaggs (Cantonment, Fla.) was impressive in his collegiate debut, averaging 46 yards per punt on five attempts. Against Georgia Tech, Skaggs averaged 40.8 yards on six kicks. His 43.18 average ranks 24th in the country.
Hills Perfect
David Hills (Sr./Latham, N.Y.) was perfect against Temple, making field goals from 24 and 36 yards. Hills has made 11 of his 14-career attempts (.786). Hills is 0-1 from inside the 20, 3-3 from 20-29 yards out, 5-6 from 30-39 yards and 5-6 from 40-49 yards. His career long is 45 yards, which he made in last year's game at Air Force.
Youth Is Served
Navy offensive coordinator Mark Hudspeth is the seventh- youngest coordinator in the country and is the fourth-youngest offensive coordinator in the country.
The Coach
Charlie Weatherbie is in his seventh season as head football coach at the Naval Academy and has compiled a record of 30-40 (.429) and a 1-0 (1.000) mark in bowl games.
Weatherbie's 30 wins in seven seasons is the fifth most in Naval Academy history. He needs two wins to tie Bill Ingram for fourth place on Navy's all-time win list. His seven seasons as head coach of the Midshipmen is the third-longest tenure in school history. Only George Welsh and Eddie Erdelatz (nine years apiece) have been head coaches longer than Weatherbie at Navy.
Weatherbie is in his 10th year as a collegiate head coach and has a career record of 45-59 (.433) and a 2-0 record in bowl games (1.000). In 1996, Weatherbie led the Midshipmen to a 9-3 mark and a victory over California in the Aloha Bowl.
Weatherbie was appointed Navy's 34th head football coach on December 30, 1994. He came to the Naval Academy after three years as head coach at Utah State, where he took the Aggies to their first Big West Conference Championship in 15 years in 1993 and a win over Ball State in the Las Vegas Bowl. He was an assistant coach at Air Force for six years and was also an assistant at Wyoming and Arkansas.
