Navy And Maryland To Meet On The Gridiron In 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk and Maryland Director of Athletics Debbie Yow announced today that Navy and Maryland will kick off the 2005 football season with a one-time event Sept. 3 at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore. The time of the game will be determined at a later date and Navy will serve as the home team.

The meeting will be the first between the two institutions since Nov. 6, 1965, when Navy defeated Maryland, 19-7, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids lead the all-time series, 15-5.

"This game, which will be an event for the state of Maryland, will be a wonderful way to kick off the 2005 football season," said Gladchuk. "It will be a festival type atmosphere for both schools with many city wide activities surrounding the game. We anticipate extraordinary interest and fully expect it to be a sellout. The Baltimore Ravens organization deserves a great deal of credit for making this matchup a reality."

"This game has been anticipated for years by many of the Terrapin faithful," said Yow. "It has been a pleasure to represent their interests and to finally reach an agreement with Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk. And, we will play the game in a state-of-the-art venue."

"This will be a big-time event for the community and the state," said Ravens Owner and Chief Executive Officer Art Modell. "We're very happy we could be part of this, and we look forward to bringing other Maryland groups together to participate in this collegiate experience. We're planning a full weekend of activities that can be enjoyed by the students, faculty and staffs from both schools, along with businesses and football fans in general."
