Navy Rifle Defeats USP 6121-5622, in Final Fall Match
The Navy rifle team concluded the fall portion of its schedule with a 6121-5622 victory over the University of the Sciences (Philadelphia, Pa.) Saturday morning at the Bancroft Hall Range. With the victory, the Mids improve to 3-0 in dual-match action.
Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.) paced the team with 1160 in the smallbore discipline, one ahead of team captain James Kauber (Burlington, Wash.), who finished with 1159. Other scorers in the smallbore for the Mids included Marta Jung (Reno, Nev.) with 1134 and Kevin Wilson (Freeport, N.Y.) with 1131. Navy led USP, 4584-4225, after the smallbore portion of the match.
In the air rifle, Kauber responded with a career-high 392 in leading the Mids to a 1537-1397 advantage. With the new career high and smallbore score of 1159, he established a new career-high aggregate score of 1551.
Other scorers for the Mids in air rifle included Albright with a career-high 388, Jung with 386 and Billy Carson (McDonough, Ga.) with 371.
"Winning is great, but today was mediocre, as it was not up to our standard," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We expect to be better than we were today. I felt we had an overall improvement in the air, which is important because it has been a concern. Today was a step in the right direction. Now, we have to put a good day of smallbore and a good day of air together."
Navy will resume action next semester on Jan. 11 at the Junior Olympic Qualifier at the Bancroft Hall range.
