Navy Rifle Earns President's Trophy
The Navy rifle team defeated the other four service academies in the annual President's Trophy match Saturday afternoon at Army. The Mids' score of 7698 was enough to best the field of Army (7667), Air Force (7524), Coast Guard (7449) and Merchant Marine (5486). In the smallbore, Navy's team score of 5575 was anchored by a career-setting match by Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.), who finished with 1170. Team captain James Kauber (Burlington, Wash.) recorded 1164, while Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M.) posted 1149. Marta Jung (Reno, Nev.) and Iain MacLeod (Brunswick, Ga.) rounded out the Navy scoring with 1146 apiece. In the air rifle, Jung finished second out of the 39 shooters with 390 to pace the team score of 1923. Albright recorded 387, while Kauber and Miller each notched 384. MacLeod concluded the Navy score in the air discipline with 378. "I thought we performed much better as I expected," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Albright had a very good day in the smallbore, while Jung had a good day in the air rifle. Overall, it was a good match." In the process of the victory, Navy's overall score of 7698 is the second-highest total score ever in a match against Army, following the Mids' score of 7710 in the dual meet Feb. 17, 2001.
