ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy baseball team continues non-conference play Saturday when the Mids travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs at noon. The teams will play a nine-inning doubleheader Saturday followed by one nine-inning game Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We are really looking forward to the opportunity to travel down to Norfolk and play in front of a lot of Navy servicemen and Academy graduates," Navy head coach Steve Whitmyer said. "Old Dominion has a very strong tradition in baseball and I'm sure they will be good this year.

"We are going to do everything we can to take the same approach as we did last weekend at Duke. We will not get caught looking ahead. I know we will improve as we move through the season. What we have to do in the next 24 hours is get rejuvenated, get ourselves in the right frame of mind, and get some rest so we are ready to go Saturday."

Navy (1-2) took one out of three games from Duke last weekend in the Mids' season-opening weekend of play. Duke captured the opener 6-4, while Navy scored an 8-4 victory in the second game. The Blue Devils took advantage of three Navy errors and won the finale, 8-4.

Dean Farmer (So./Knoxville, Tenn.) recorded three hits as the designated hitter, including a home run in his first-career at-bat Saturday at Duke. Third baseman Jake Miller (Jr./Santa Maria, Calif.) also tallied three hits with a home run and drove in four runs. Shortstop Matt Lukevics (Fr./Tampa, Fla.) had three hits, two of which were doubles, and scored three runs.

ODU (0-1) opened its regular season Wednesday afternoon in Durham, N.C., falling to Duke, 7-2. The Monarchs fell behind 3-0 after two innings and trailed 7-2 after five. Duke's Tim Layden pitched five innings and improved to 1-0 with the victory. ODU's Justin Verlander worked 4.1 innings, striking out eight, walking five, and allowed seven runs. Offensively, ODU outhit the Blue Devils, 9-6, and was led by left fielder Brandon Lenoir, who went 3-for-4.

Navy won the only meeting between the two teams, posting a lopsided 21-2 win over the Monarchs in 1967.
