Award Winners Announced At Football Banquet

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The annual Naval Academy football banquet was held Saturday evening at Alumni Hall with several prestigious awards handed out.
Brian Schulz (Sr./Round Rock, Texas) was awarded the George Fritzinger Memorial Award, which is presented annually to a member of the graduating class who, as a football interior lineman, has excelled as a student-athlete and has contributed to the overall team leadership and spirit. The family of George Fritzinger, a 1959 Naval Academy graduate who was a three-year letterman on the varsity football team and earned All-East recognition, initiated the award in 1992. He was a two-year starter at guard, playing both ways, and a member of Navy's 1957 team, which defeated Rice, 20-7, in the 1958 Cotton Bowl. He later served in the U.S. Air Force. A graduate of Harvard Business School, Fritzinger was a highly successful entrepreneur in the broadcast media, entertainment and advertising industries. Schulz, a Mathematics major, was a two-year starter at center for the Midshipmen.
Matt Berger (Sr./Roanoke, Va.) took home the Jeffrey R. Korn Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, which was established by Jeff's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ronald D. Korn, in memory of their son, a member of the Class of 1983. Jeff Korn was more than just a letterwinning quarterback at Navy, he was always the one who "answered the call" in Bancroft Hall, whether it was helping a plebe through some tough times or assisting a classmate who needed advice. Jeff died in an automobile accident in the summer of 1982 while returning home from serving on Plebe Summer Detail. The award is given annually to the First Classman on the team who has demonstrated excellence both in the classroom and on the football field. Berger, a computer science major, played in six games this past fall at defensive tackle.
Jake Bowen (Sr./Asheville, N.C.) was the recipient of the Cmdr. Ralph Sentmann Award, which honors the member of the graduating class from the varsity football team who has achieved the greatest increase in class standing from Plebe year until First Class year. Cmdr. Sentmann graduated with the Class of 1925 and served in the submarine force. Upon his death in 1987, he endowed this award through the Naval Academy Alumni Association. Bowen, defensive co-captain, battled through an injury plagued senior campaign to play in four games, including the season finale against Army.
Quarterback Aaron Polanco (Fr./Austin, Texas) was awarded the Collins/Roos Class of 1949 Junior Varsity MVP Award, which is presented annually to the most valuable player on the junior varsity football team as chosen by a vote of his teammates.
Linebacker John Collins (So./Toledo, Ohio) was named the Lt. Cmdr. A.A. Schaufelberger Award winner, which is presented annually to Navy's most valuable player of the sprint football Army-Navy game. The award was established in memory of Albert A. Schaufelberger, Class of '71, who was killed while in service to his country in El Salvador in 1983. The son of a career naval officer, Lt. Cmdr. Schaufelberger was born in Annapolis and during his Academy days played both lacrosse and 150 lb. (now sprint) football. After commissioning and post-commissioning training, he was assigned to Seal Team ONE and served with the United States Military Group in El Salvador. At the time of his death, he was the second-ranking officer of the American advisors to El Salvador's armed forces. Collins recorded 15 tackles and a sack in the Mids 17-10 overtime victory over the Black Knights, giving the Mids the Collegiate Sprint Football League Championship.
