ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The Navy baseball team (5-10) will play host to the Brown Bears (4-2) in the home opener Thursday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. First pitch is 3 p.m. The Mids are coming off a 1-4 trip to Florida over spring break.
"I was very disappointed in the way we played over spring break," said head coach Steve Whitmyer. "We have to be more aggressive offensively and we need some of the juniors and seniors to step up and start playing better. We are excited to finally have the chance to play at home and Brown will be a good test for us. They have continued to improve every year and they have gotten off to a good start."
The Bears enter Thursday's contest with a 4-2 record, winning three of four games against North Carolina A&T and splitting two games with High Point.
Whitmyer will send sophomore right hander Andy Froistad to the mound for the Mids. Froistad has been Navy's best pitcher too date, posting a 2-0 record and a 1.13 ERA.
"Andy has pitched very well for us so far and if he pitches the way he is capable of we will have a good chance to win."
Offensively, the Mids are hitting just .227 as a team. Freshman shortstop Matt Lukevics leads the way with a .317 batting average, while center fielder Craig Candeto is hitting .279.
