ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Jonathan Stern pitched six innings of shutout baseball, while Brown rocked Navy pitchers for 17 hits as the Bears (5-2) walloped Navy (5-11), 11-1, Thursday afternoon in the home opener at Max Bishop Stadium. The game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
"What can you say about that game," said Navy head coach Steve Whitmyer. "They were very good in every phase of the game and we were very poor in every phase of the game. We are really struggling at the plate and right now it is mental. The guys are working just as hard as ever before, but they are guessing too much at the plate and it has gotten into their heads."
The Bears touched up Navy starter Andy Froistad for six runs, four earned, in four innings of work.
"Froistad will bounce back and will be ready the next time it is his turn. I don't get down on guys who lose because they get hit. He was aggressive, he just didn't have his best stuff today."
The Mids, who are hitting just .229 as a team, struck out 13 times in the game and never threatened to score until the seventh when Todd McKinney doubled down the left field line, scoring Rusty Hearn.
Miller and Woolsey led the Mids with two hits apiece, while Adam Royster had four hits for Brown.
Navy will be back in action on Saturday when it plays host to Penn State at 1 p.m. at Max Bishop Stadium.
