Miles Joins Football Staff

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Naval Academy head football coach Paul Johnson announced Wednesday that Shaine Miles has joined the Navy coaching staff as assistant defensive line coach. Miles comes to Navy from Marshall where he coached the outside linebackers.

"Shaine is a young enthusiastic coach who has come highly recommended," said Johnson. "He has worked with Coach Kevin Kelly the last two years at Marshall and will be an asset to the staff."

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach at the Naval Academy," said Miles. "Coach Johnson has been extremely successful everywhere he has coached and I'm looking forward to working with the defensive staff he has assembled and winning some games next fall."

At Marshall, Miles assisted the defensive coaching staff with all aspects of game planning and practice, including breaking down and grading film. He also worked closely with the offensive scout team to give the Herd defense a taste of the things opposing teams will do each week during the season.

Miles started his coaching career at Bainbridge High School in Bainbridge, Ga., where he was the offensive line coach and special team's coordinator from 1997-99.

Miles is a 1996 graduate of Virginia Tech where he received his B.A. in history. He was a four-year letterwinner as a tight end at Virginia Tech (1992-96) and helped lead the Hokies to four bowl games (Independence, Gator, Sugar and Orange). Two of those teams won bowl games as Virginia Tech defeated Indiana, 45-20, in the 1993 Independence Bowl and Texas, 28-10, in the 1995 Sugar Bowl. Miles received his M.S. in Education Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech in 1997.

Miles is a native of Salem, Va., and was an All-State linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year at Salem High School in 1992. He is married to the former Vanessa Rorer of Salem.

With the hiring of Miles, Johnson has completed his coaching staff for the 2002 season.
