Defensive Coordinator Buddy Green
Q. What have you seen so far from the defense after six practices?
A. We have a long way to go. We are trying to do two things. Getting better fundamentally, understand how to run to the ball and play the game the right way and install our new package and making sure we have an understanding of what we are trying to do. I think we are making some progress as far as understanding the package. We just need to keep working at getting better as a football team. We aren't anywhere close.
Q. Has anybody surprised you or stood out?
A. I think Eddie (Carthan) has stood out. He stood out for me as a leader, he's done some good things the first six days. If I was going to single out anybody, I would single out him. He's done a good job. He has shown good leadership. We need more like him.
Q. You have a scrimmage on Saturday, what are you going to be looking for?
A. People playing the game, body position, guys running to the ball, taking good angles and playing the game the way its supposed to be played on defense. Playing with the pads low, reading our keys and being a disciplined defense is really what we are looking for. Spring is a time where individuals need to get better. When each individual improves you have a chance in the fall to put it all together and start working as a team.
Linebacker Eddie Carthan
Q. Are you happy with where the defense is right now?
A. I think the defense is doing pretty well. We are coming out to practice real intense. We get a chance to go against the offense a lot and we are getting a good look at the option so we will be ready to play against teams that run the ball. As far as I can see the intensity is real high, everybody is playing hard.
Q. What is the difference between this defense and the one you played in the fall?
A. As far as scheme, it isn't as difficult. The coaches are trying to make it simple so everybody can go out and just play. Play hard and move to the ball.
Linebacker Dustin Elliott
Q. Where do you think the defense is six practices in to spring ball?
A. Just like Eddie said, the intensity is higher than it was in the fall.
Q. What do you need to work on in the last nine practices?
A. Just better at everything, know what you're supposed to do, where to line up and keep working hard at getting better.
