Brindel Selected To Play In East-West Shrine Game

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.-Navy senior defensive tackle Josh Brindel (Ward, S.C.) has been selected to play for the East in the 78th annual East-West Shrine Game, which will be played Saturday, January 11, 2003, at Pac Bell Park in San Francisco. The East-West Shrine Game is arguably the best of the four all-star games as NFL scouts pick the participants. Brindel is the 17th player in school history to be selected for the game and the second in as many years. Wide receiver Jeff Gaddy played in the game last year.
"We are excited for Josh, it is a tremendous honor to be selected for this game," said Navy head football coach Paul Johnson. "Playing in this game will be something he remembers for the rest of his life. I am sure he will do a great job of representing our football program and the Brigade of Midshipmen."
Brindel is coming off a solid junior campaign and appears on the initial watch list for the Lombardi Award, which goes annually to top lineman in college football.
Brindel started all 10 games for the Midshipmen last year and finished fifth on the team and first among defensive linemen in tackles with 44. His seven tackles for a loss tied for the team lead.
Thirty-two players were on the initial selection list including four players who will line up against Navy this fall-Dan Koppen (center) and Brian St. Pierre (quarterback) of Boston College, Clarence Holmes (defensive lineman) of Army and Wes Crawley (cornerback) of Air Force. Washington State's Mike Price will coach the West team, while Notre Dame's Tyrone Willingham will coach the East.
Other notables include linebacker Lance Briggs of Arizona State (Preseason All-American), wide receiver Kevin Curtis of Utah State (led the nation in receiving last year), quarterback Jason Gesser of Washington State (Heisman Trophy candidate), running back Dwone Hicks of Middle Tennessee State (second in the nation in scoring last year), quarterback Carson Palmer of USC (Heisman Trophy candidate), safety Troy Polamalu of USC (Preseason All-American) and quarterback Byron Leftwich of Marshall (Heisman Trophy candidate).
