Former Navy Football Star Named White House Fellow

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Former Navy football star Lt. Cmdr. Vince McBeth, USN, has been appointed by President George W. Bush to the 2002 Class of White House Fellows.

The White House Fellows is the nation's most prestigious program for public service and leadership. McBeth, a 1987 graduate of the Naval Academy, was selected by the President's Commission on White House Fellowships as one of only 13 fellows.

McBeth currently supervises, directs and coordinates the efforts of the Navy Secretariat staff, and oversees the offices of White House Liaison, Congressional Liaison, General Administration and Protocol. As a White House Fellow, Lt. Cmdr. McBeth will work as an aide to senior White House staff or as a special assistant to a Cabinet Secretary. His responsibilities will range from drafting and reviewing legislation to chairing meetings and conducting briefings. In addition, he will participate in an education program that includes domestic and international travel and a speaker series of off the record talks with the nation's most prominent leaders from the public and private sectors.

McBeth has served as Executive Officer of the USS BARRY, and supervised 315 military personnel in the Persian Gulf while enforcing United Nations sanctions in Iraq. His awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

McBeth was a four-year football letterwinner at Navy and was team captain in 1986. In 1984, he helped lead Navy to a 38-21 upset over second ranked South Carolina. In 1986, he led Navy with 154 tackles, the second most in school history.
