Sophomore defensive end Pierre Moss (Charleston, W.Va.)
Q. First off talk about your name, your first name is Sam but you go by Pierre.
A. My dad and I have the same name so he goes by Sam and I go by Pierre.
Q. You came here from Charleston, W.Va. How did the Academy spark your interest?
A. Well, I went to football camp at the Academy in the 12th grade. Coach Pehrson talked to me at the camp about going to NAPS and I decided to try it.
Q. Was Coach Pehrson your instructor in football camp?
A. Yes, he worked with the defensive linemen at the camp.
Q. How important was it to you that he was retained on this staff? As the coach that recruited you and coaches you, I am assuming you have developed a relationship with him.
A. When I was at NAPS I was always looking forward to coming here and playing for him. He got me interested in this place, so I was happy to see him come back.
Q. What was it about the Academy that piqued your interest?
A. The Academy is a beautiful place. I love the campus. That was the first thing that got me. The beauty of it blew me away.
Q. In terms of what you are doing now on the field, do you feel like you made good progress this summer?
A. Yes, I think I have. I worked hard all summer.
Q. Did you dress for the varsity last year?
A. I dressed for the Georgia Tech and Army game, but I didn?t play.
Q. Did you stand on the sideline last year and say to yourself that you were going to be out on the field playing next year?
A. Yeah, definitely. I wouldn?t be on the team if I didn?t want to try and play. I want to start; I want to play as much as possible.
Q. What did you do to prepare yourself during the summer?
A. I was doing a bunch of sprints. I would run 100?s, 80?s, 60?s, and 40?s. It was timed interval running. I was doing that nearly every day. I would lift, basically I would do chest one day and legs the next.
Q. Were you doing this in Annapolis or at home?
A. On cruise it?s hard to lift weights. When we were in port I would lift weights and run. If I were at home I would be working out like that and when I was here I would do the regular workouts and then after the workouts I would do my extra running deal.
Q. Where did you go on your cruise?
A. We went to New York City first, then we went to Newport, R.I., and then Boston.
Q. Not a bad tour
A. Not bad at all
Q. Did you spend a lot of time in port getting to see the sights?
A. You do. Sometimes you have to serve watch. If you are in a good port, you have to maybe serve watch one day that you are there. I had to do that in Boston. I liked Boston the best; Boston was the best port I thought.
Q. Any military background in your family?
A. Not really. My grandpa was in World War II. That?s where I got my name Pierre. He had a friend that was in the French underground so he named my dad Pierre and my dad named me Pierre.
