Quarterback/Fullbacks Coach Ivin Jasper

Q. Talk a little bit about how the quarterbacks are progressing right now?

A. Slowly but surely. We have a depth set. Craig Candeto is one, Aaron Polanco is two and Lamar Owens is third. Owens has been a surprise, a pleasant surprise for us. They are progressing, but sometimes we still screw up some things as far as learning the system and being smart. Whoever plays the smartest, whoever can get us in the right play, is going to play. That is true in any offense, but it is even more important in the option offense.

Q. Is that why Craig is number one right now? Has he been the most consistent?

A. Yeah, Craig has been the most consistent guy since the spring. He?s tough, he?s trying hard to be a leader out there.

Q. Do each of the three bring something different to the table?

A. Yes. Craig can do a little bit of both, running the ball and passing. The thing about Aaron Polanco is that he moves the ball. He?s not flashy or anything like that, but when he?s in there the ball goes up and down the field. Polanco also has a strong arm. Lamar is an option quarterback; he?s the kind of guy you recruit to run this kind of offense. That part of his game is pretty strong right now.

Q. In the past Coach Johnson has used multiple quarterbacks; do you see that happening again this year?

A. That very well might happen. Coach Johnson knows how to use guys at the right time. I tell those guys they aren?t competing against each other; they are competing against the offense to get better. In this offense, you?re another running back and you?re going to take some shots so if one guy goes down, the next guy should be able to step in and keep it going. Having two guys is good, but to have three guys that can play is even better. We?ll see what happens.

Q. Do you think people overrate the fact that you need to have a clear number one quarterback?

A. It?s better to have three that can play, especially when the guys on the other side of the football are getting bigger and bigger. When we?ve been pretty good running this offense, we have played two quarterbacks-Navy, Georgia Southern, Hawaii-It?s important to have more than one guy.
