Navy head football coach Paul Johnson
Q. Talk a little bit about your philosophy with the scout team as far as if you?re not on the two-deep you are on the scout team.
A. That?s the way every football program I?ve ever heard of is run except for the way this one was. I don?t know of any others that aren?t run that way, if you?re not on the two or three-deep, you?re on the scout team. It doesn?t make sense to send the seventh team over there and not get a look. We want to put the best players we can put on the scout team.
Q. Scott Lieng and Jim Zakar both quit today, was that based on them not being on that depth chart?
A. You?ll have to ask them, I don?t know. We?re trying to run a football program; it can?t be Club Med. We have all good kids, I don?t think we have bad kids, but some kids are Division I football players and some aren?t. This isn?t like a Club team or a fraternity where you can just hang out if you want to hang out. If you want to stay out here and do what we ask you, then you can. If you?re not on the first couple of teams, you are going to be on the scout team. If you don?t want to play, then you need to quit.
Q. Do you think there will be more.
A. Oh, I don?t know. There could be.
Q. How many players will you travel on the road.
A. Probably 72
Q. How many quarterbacks do you plan on traveling?
A. I don?t know. We?ll just have to see. Probably three.
Q. How many place kickers?
A. One probably.
Q. You won?t bring a second one just in case?
A. Probably not. We have someone else that could do it in an emergency. We?ll just see when we sit down and figure out who we need to go play. If we need two, we?ll take two.
Q. When does that decision have to be made?
A. Next Friday when we get on the bus.
Q. Was it encouraging getting a lot of your injured guys back today like Ben Mathews, Eddie Carthan, Bobby McClarin and Lane Jackson?
A. Yeah. I think that means they are trying to get back out here.
Q. How much longer for Walsh?
A. He was back today, he was out there practicing.
