Sophomore cornerback Vaughn Kelley
Q. How do you feel the defense is coming along?
A. I think we have come together a whole lot. Last year we didn't have a lot of team unity and we have that this year. I feel like the whole team is closer.
Q. Some of the guys have mentioned that this defense is a lot more aggressive, that last year you had to think more instead of react. Have you found that to be true?
A. The defense is a lot more aggressive. As long as everyone does what they are supposed to do, you can't go wrong.
Q. I read at the start of practice that Shalimar Brazier said that you had the chance to be a great corner because you had the right mentality, what is your attitude about being a guy who is out there on an island.
A. The way I see it is that I'm just another receiver out there. Once the ball is in the air, we are taught to play the ball and forget about the man. I play the man until I see the ball and then it's just me and the ball. I become an offensive player to speak.
Q. So you have the mentality that you're going to make a play, not stop a play.
A. Always. Our mentality on defense is get off the field and the quickest way to do that is turnovers. Fumbles, interceptions, it doesn't matter.
Q. How about your experience at the position, did you play corner in high school?
A. I played corner my entire high school career. I always wanted to play cornerback in college and luckily Navy recruited me and here I am.
Q. You're from South Florida right?
A. Yes sir
Q. Where from?
A. Ft. Lauderdale, St. Thomas Aquinas High School
Q. Did other schools recruit you
A. I had a lot of schools recruit me, but they were mostly Division II and Division III schools. Navy was the only Division I school to recruit me.
Q. Did you feel like the change in coaching staff gave you a fresh opportunity?
A. It gave everyone a clean slate.
