Sophomore wide receiver Amir Jenkins
Q. How do you think the offense is progressing?
A. We are making a lot of progress. We're ready for SMU. We've been beating up on each other for about three weeks now; we're ready to get after them.
Q. From your own standpoint, it looks like you came back a little bit bigger. Did you put on some weight? Did you grow a little bit?
A. I put on some weight. We spent the summer in the weight room. I feel like I can play even better at this weight.
Q. Did you feel like you would need to put on weight, especially with the blocking you have to do in this offense?
A. Definitely. This offense requires you to be more physical at wide receiver. We are always blocking somebody, whether the ball is coming our way or not. We always have an assignment.
Q. Is that one of the biggest adjustments you faced going from high school to college as a wide receiver?
A. Definitely. In high school I didn't play hard every snap. Now, we call it the eye in the sky, the camera always sees when you're taking a play off or not going full speed. If you aren't playing hard you're going to hear about it when you watch the video.
Q. Let me ask about coming here in the first place, you went to Sidwell Friends correct?
A. Yes
Q. That has a great reputation as a school, I would imagine you had a lot of options academically and athletically. What were some of your thoughts that went into your choice to come to the Naval Academy?
A. I was basically looking for a school that was close to home, offered a great education and had a great sports program. Navy was the best choice.
Q. What were some of the other options?
A.VMI offered me a scholarship and some other I-AA schools offered me as well. Navy was the only I-A school to offer me.
Q. Was there any military influence in your background?
A. No, this is my first military experience. It's a lot different.
Q. But you've been able to come through it pretty well, I mean supposedly you've gotten past the hardest part right?
A. It's a struggle every day, trust me, it's a struggle every day. We have all chosen the tougher road knowing that it will payoff in the long run.
Q. What pushes you through it?
A. I motivate myself every day to come out and get better on the football field as well as in the classroom.
