Mids Conclude Rifle Regular Season Sunday
The Navy rifle team will conclude its regular season against Canisius Sunday with an 8 a.m. match at the Bancroft Hall Range. The Mids will be seeking their 10th victory of the season, following a 7696-7692 victory over Army last weekend to improve to 9-1.
Navy received word earlier this week that its air rifle team posted an NCAA-qualifying score during the match versus SUNY-Maritime Feb. 8, and team captain James Kauber (Burlington, Wash.) and sophomore Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.) also qualified for the NCAA Championship as individuals. Kauber's score of 392 in the air rifle against SUNY-Maritime tied a career high and has been an integral part of his team-leading 387.0 average. Albright registered a Naval Academy record 1176 in the smallbore against SUNY-Maritime, as he has been the Mids' most-prolific shooter all season with an 1168.0 average in the discipline.
"As the season is winding down, we need to do well in this match," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We're anticipating the upcoming championships. It is Canisius's final match ever as a program, and we're honored to have been an opponent of them in the conference and in their last match."
Following Sunday's match, the Mids will play host to the MAC Championship Saturday, March 1. Nearly 30-to-40 teams from the conference will be competing in four divisions throughout the day.
