Navy Volleyball Conquers Lehigh in Three-Game Sweep

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Navy volleyball team has fought its way back to .500 in Patriot League action thanks in part to a three-game sweep over Lehigh Friday night in Bethlehem.

The Mids, who are 14-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference, produced a 30-21, 30-26, 30-21 triumph over the hosts by holding the Mountain Hawks to a meager .018 hitting percentage, including negative hitting marks in the second and third games. Navy, meanwhile, boasted a .225 hitting percentage, utilizing a balanced offensive attack. Six Mids produced four or more kills with four of the six recording eight or more kills. Senior outside hitter Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Breckenridge, Colo.) led the way with 11 kills on 27 attempts. Sophomore Beth McArthur (Roseville, Minn.) had an impressive match with a team-high five blocks, while hitting .300 with nine kills on 20 attempts with just three errors. Team captain Katey Geary (San Jose, Calif.) pitched in eight kills and eight digs, while rookie outside hitter Diane Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added eight kills, a service ace and a pair of block assists. Setter Ashley Musser was credited with 35 of the Mids' 38 assists, while adding four kills, five digs and two block assists.

As a team, the Mids produced one solo block and 16 block assists, while Lehigh recorded just one solo block and two block assists. Serving remains an Achilles heel for the Mids as they recorded 10 errors in the three-game match and posted just four aces.

Navy returns to action Saturday when it faces a much improved Lafayette squad. The Leopards, who are 9-9 overall and 2-4 in conference action, pushed Patriot League unbeaten American to four games Friday night. Match time for Saturday's contest is slated for 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
