Navy Sweeps Coppin State
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy totaled 12 service aces and a .274 hitting percentage in sweeping Coppin State, Tuesday night in a non-league volleyball match in Macdonough Hall. The Midshipmen (16-6) defeated the Lady Eagles (1-18), 30-21, 30-19, 31-29.
"It was a good match for us," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We were able to try a few new wrinkles in our lineup, have some of our players who have played more of a reserve role this season receive some key minutes, and we were able to give some of our starters a little rest."
Navy was led offensively by team captain Katey Geary (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) and freshman outside hitter Rachel Dougherty (Derwood, Md.) who both tallied 10 kills on the night. Defensively for the Mids, Andrea Wernecke (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) hauled in nine digs, Geary added eight digs and Amanda McHenry (Sr., Cary, N.C.) tallied four blocks.
Renee Bowen and Trevon Dyson each totaled 10 kills to lead the Lady Eagles, while Shauniece Steward grabbed a match-high 15 digs.
Navy will return to Patriot League action this weekend when the Mids play Friday at Army and Saturday at Holy Cross. The matches are the final road matches of the season for Navy.
