Navy Enjoys Day on the Water

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The three Navy crew programs each enjoyed a successful day on the water Saturday as 13 of Navy's 15 boats placed among the top-10 crews in their respective races at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia.

In the varsity races, Navy's lightweight squad saw its top boat win its race, the women's team placed second and the heavyweight's team third.

Navy's lightweight boat recorded a time of 12:51.89 to win its race by 15 seconds over Penn, with a second Navy entry placing third in a time of 13:22.90.

"It was a very good day for us," said Navy lightweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "We showed good depth by having strong rows from each of our crews. It is good preparation for what is left of our fall season and for the upcoming spring season."

Penn won the women's race in a time of 14:30.95, with Navy second in a 14:36.27 clocking. The Mids finished 25 seconds ahead of third-place Marist.

"We fell just short of winning the varsity race, but we were able to put a lot of separation between us and the remainder of the field, including a number of conference teams," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes.

The New York Athletic Club, featuring several national team rowers, won the varsity heavyweight race in a time of 12:33.21, two seconds in front of the Australian National Under-23 team. Navy's boat, which broke its rudder at the halfway point in the race, placed third in a time of 12:38.19.

"We had a really good rowing going," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "We started 12 seconds in back of NYAC and had made up eight of those seconds when the rudder broke. We spent the last half of the race having to turn and steer by power.

"After seeing what they went through and how they managed the hand dealt to them, I can honestly say I have never been prouder of a crew than I was today."

Each of Navy's varsity crews will close their fall seasons Nov. 7 at the Princeton Chase.
