2005 East-West Shrine Game Initial East Roster Announced

SAN FRANCISCO - The East-West Shrine Game's executive director, Jack Hart, today released the initial roster of East Team players who have accepted an invitation to play in the 2005 game.? The East Team will feature two Unitas Award finalists, an award bestowed upon the nation's top senior quarterback, the Big Ten's all-time career reception leader, and members from two of the United States' military academies.? The only post-season, collegiate all-star game played to benefit the children who receive free medical care at any of the nation's 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children, will be played at SBC Park on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. PST.?

Head Coach of the East Team is Purdue University's Joe Tiller.? Tiller is only the fifth man in Shrine Game history to have both played in and been head coach in the game.? He played in the 39th East-West Shrine Game in 1963, as a tackle on the West squad from Montana State University.? Tiller hit the 100th win mark as a head coach in the Boilermakers victory over Ohio State last weekend.? Tiller is 100-66-1 in 14 seasons as a head coach, the past eight of those at Purdue.?

Joining Tiller will be Boilermakers Kyle Orton (QB) and Taylor Stubblefield (WR).? Orton is a 2004 Unitas Award finalist and is third in Purdue history with 8,534 passing yards and 54 touchdown passes.? Stubblefield is the Big Ten's all-time career leader with 304 receptions and is second in school history with 3,388 career receiving yards. ?

Hailing from Army and Navy are Greg Washington (LB) and Kyle Eckel (FB) respectively.? Washington is team captain of Army and leads the nation in tackles per game with 13.7.? Eckel is one of the top fullbacks in the nation.?

Joining Orton as a Unitas Award Finalist is Dan Orlovsky (QB) from the University of Connecticut.? Orlovsky is captain of the Huskies and the school's career leader in touchdown passes with 78.?

University of Virginia's Elton Brown (OL), a 2004 All-American candidate, Lombardi Award semifinalist, given to the nation's best lineman, linebacker or tight end, and Outland Trophy candidate, for the nation's best interior lineman, will also join the East squad.?
