Van Hartesvelt Named First-Team All-Patriot League
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After previously receiving a pair of second-team honors in her career, Navy's Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Sr., Breckenridge, Colo.) was named First-Team All-Patriot League in her final season at Navy, it was announced Wednesday by the league office. Van Hartesvelt was selected to the league's second team during both her freshman and junior seasons, and was tabbed as the league's co-rookie of the year in 2001.
Van Hartesvelt set personal-best marks this year for kills (445), kills per game (4.45), hitting percentage (.290), service aces (57), service ace average (0.57), digs (264) and digs per game (2.64). She totaled 20 or more kills in 11 matches, 10 or more kills in 21 matches and 15 double-doubles. Van Hartesvelt ranks second in the Patriot League in kills per game, fourth in hitting percentage and aces per game and 12th in digs per game.
A three-time Patriot League Player-of-the-Week recipient this season, Van Hartesvelt also was named to all-tournament team at each of the three tournaments the Mids participated in this year.
The only player in Navy history to lead the team in kills during each of her four seasons, her kills-per-game mark this year is a Navy record and her kill total ranks second only to the 499 kills posted by Rachel Shropa in 1997. With 1,452-career kills, Van Hartesvelt stands second only to Shropa's total of 1,577. She stands sixth in league history in career kills and needs only 10 to jump into third place. She also ranks second at Navy with 170-career service aces -- trailing only Katie Schullian's mark of 189 -- and is seventh in Patriot League history.
Navy will play American Friday at 6 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament, with the winner to face either Army or Bucknell in the championship match Saturday at 7 p.m. All matches will be played at Bender Arena on the American campus in Washington, D.C.
