Navy Rifle Claims President's Trophy By Sweeping Service Academies

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Navy rifle team pieced together its most complete effort of the young season and got strong performances up and down the lineup, to claim the presitigious President's Trophy on Saturday. The Mids outdistanced Army by 15 points, including 12 points in the smallbore competition. Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.) claimed the overall individual title.

"It was an extremely challenging day and a very hard-fought match," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "I was real pleased with our performance and I think we are heading in the right direction. Army has a great team and we knew we were going to have to shoot well to beat them. It always matters a little extra when you can beat Army."

Navy scored 5823 (2897-2926) points to Army's 5808 (2885-2923), Air Force's (5682 (2817-2865) and Coast Guard's 5580 (2744-2836). Freshman Josh Albright (Shelton, Conn.) led the Mids with a 588 in smallbore. Matt Albright and Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored a 581, freshman Nicholas Hogberg added a 575 and Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C.) scored a 572 for Navy's 2897 smallbore score. In the air rifle, Matt Albright tallied a 594, Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C.) had a 588, Miller shot a 582, Schneider scored a 581 and freshman Monica Amagna tallied a 581 for Navy's 2926 air rifle score.

"I was very pleased with the way everyone shot," added Kelley. "We had three of our 10 scores from freshmen and got great leadership from Matt Albright and Miller. Overall, we are headed in the right direction and it will be good to be back on the Yard and have some time off. Its a good way to cap the early part of the season."

Navy will be in action next on Nov. 20, when it hosts the University of the Sciences in Annapolis.
