Second-Ranked Mids Clobber Holy Cross, 23-5

ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Eighteen different players scored for the Midshipmen, as the second-ranked Navy lacrosse team hammered Holy Cross, 23-5, Sunday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The 23 goals are the most in Div. I lacrosse this season and the most by the Mids since their 24-6 triumph over Penn on April 2, 1980. The 18-goal winning margin is also the largest by Navy since that same contest.
"Emotionally, I thought we were ready to play," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "I knew it might be a little tough getting up for these past two games after beating the No. 1-ranked team in the country the week before. I thought we did a better job today than on Friday coming out and attacking."
Navy jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter before Holy Cross got on the scoreboard at the 5:32 mark. Crusaders face-off specialist Rudy Anderson beat Navy rookie Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) at the "x" and charged in to give Holy Cross its first goal of the game.
The Mids held the Crusaders scoreless in the second stanza, while Navy tacked on four goals to its lead heading into halftime (13-1).
The third quarter featured another scoring display by Navy, as the Mids produced nine goals. The Crusaders, however, powered in four goals of there own against Navy back-up keeper, freshman Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.).
The Mids scored just one goal in the final quarter of play, wrapping up the Patriot League regular season with a flawless 7-0 record.
Navy senior Joe Bossi (Skaneateles, N.Y.) led the Mids with three goals and an assist, while sophomore attack Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) and midfielder Steve Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) each turned in a goal and a pair of assists.
Navy claimed 22 of the 31 (.710) face-offs, including 8 of 10 by rookie William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.). Perhaps Wallace's best game of the season, he also scored his first-collegiate goal and on the very next series produced his first-career assist.
Holy Cross sophomore midfielder John O'Sullivan scored a team-high three goals, while junior attack Mike McKee turned in a pair of assists.
With the win, Navy improved to 10-1, the first time since 1978 the Mids have reached double-digit wins.
Navy plays its regular-season finale next Saturday when it plays host to top-ranked Johns Hopkins (8-1). Game time is set for 12-Noon and will be carried live by College Sports Television, as well as on the radio on 1430 WNAV. The annual Navy Blue/Gold Football Game will follow the lacrosse game.
