Volleyball Moves to 7-1
BALTIMORE, Md. - After suffering its first loss of the season Saturday night, the Navy volleyball team returned to its winning ways with a three-game sweep of Coppin State Tuesday night in Baltimore. The Mids improved to 7-1 on the season with the 30-23, 31-29, 30-19 victory over the Lady Eagles.
"We had two goals tonight," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We wanted to win in three games and we wanted everyone to play. We accomplished both objectives."
Navy ran off nine of the opening 10 points in game one and never saw its advantage dip below five points during the remainder of the game. Game two was a different story as Navy, playing a number of substitutes, fell behind by deficits of 11-5 and 15-7 before rallying to tie the game at 16-16.
The game remained tight until the Lady Eagles took a 29-27 lead. After a Navy sideout pulled the Mids to within one, Coppin State was called for being lined up out of rotation on back-to-back point to give Navy a 30-29 lead. The Mids quickly took advantage of the situation and put a kill down to end the game.
One of the sparks for Navy was the play of Nikki England off the bench. The freshman tallied five kills and digs and added a service ace in her limited time on the floor.
"We have high expectations for the players and for the team," said Schwob. "No matter who is on the floor, we expect them to play at a high level."
Navy will return to action with a trio of matches Friday and Saturday at the Cranberry Classic in Lawrenceville, N.J.
