NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz.) led a strong Navy showing at the Old Dominion Invitational over the weekend, claiming the "C" singles title and teaming with Stanley Kahl (Richland, Pa.) for the "C" doubles title on Sunday.
Lai defeated Josh Levitz in the finals in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to earn his first individual title of the year. Lai won four of his five matches in straight sets as his semifinals match went to three sets. He then doubled up with Kahl to win the "C" doubles title in impressive fashion, allowing opponents to win just 13 games in four matches.
Navy also had strong showings at all the other singles brackets. In "D" singles, Alex James (Visalia, Calif.) and Kyle Jones (Canton, Ohio) both advanced to the semifinals, where both lost in three sets.
In "A" singles, freshman Jason Hill (Atlanta, Ga.) advanced to the quarterfinals, posting a 2-1 record during the tournament. Nate Nelms (St. Mary's, Ga.) also competed in the "A" division, winning a match in the consolation quarterfinals.
In "B" singles, Kahl advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to the eventual champion, Miroslav Vlcek, 6-4, 6-1.
In "B" doubles, Johnny Waters (Papillion, Neb.) and Hill teamed to advanced to the semifinals. Lastly, in "D" doubles, James and Jones advanced to the finals, where they fell 9-8 (4) to Gusmao and Iranshad.
Navy will compete in the ITA Regional Championships next weekend in Hanover, N.H.
