HANOVER, N.H. -- Freshman Nate Nelms (St. Mary's, Ga.) recorded a solid showing at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, as he reached the consolation bracket semifinals. Nelms defeated Lehigh's Randall Smalley in the quarterfinals today, before bowing out in the semifinals.
Nelms lost his first match of the tournament on Friday to Yale's Rowan Reynolds, but climbed back in the consolation bracket, winning two matches yesterday. Nelms then defeated Smalley, Lehigh's No. 1 seed, 6-7, 6-1, 10-6, to advance to the consolation semifinals, where Penn State's Michael James ended his run with a 6-3, 6-1 setback.
Navy's other entry in singles competition was Brandon Carter (West Chester, Pa.). Carter finished one match short of qualifying for the main draw, as he was defeated by Boston College's Brian Hartness, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Carter defeated Arjun Vaidya of Rutgers, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-1, in the first qualifying match on Friday.
The doubles team of Carter and Nelms also competed on Friday, falling in the round of 64 to 14th-seeded David Rosenfeld and Christian Guevara of Virginia Tech, 8-5.
Action will continue at the ITA Regional Championships through Tuesday.
