Navy Football Team To Use 12th Mid

Oct. 26, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md.--Navy head football coach Paul Johnson announced Tuesday that tryouts for the 12th Mid will be held Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. Each battalion (six) can submit three seniors for the tryouts and the midshipman that is selected will be part of the kickoff coverage team on Navy's first kickoff in the Temple game.

The concept of a 12th Mid was hatched at Johnson's radio show last year when a midshipman proposed the idea to Coach Johnson. The idea came to fruition in Navy's final two home games of 2004 when John McClaughlin was a member of the kickoff team against Delaware and John Reuland participated on the kickoff team against Rutgers. Reuland assisted on a tackle when he got a second opportunity late in the game.

The selected midshipmen will also have the honor of wearing No. 12, as 1963 Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach has given his permission for his number to be 'unretired' for this special occasion.
