Midshipmen Rally to Defeat Lehigh in Four Games on Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Ashley Musser (Industry, Pa.) recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 10 kills as Navy bounced back from a first-game loss to defeat Lehigh in four games, 25-30, 30-24, 30-24, 34-32, in volleyball action on Friday night. With the win, Navy improved to 16-7 overall and 7-4 in Patriot League action, while Lehigh fell to 6-18 on the season and 0-10 in league play.

"Lehigh played hard tonight," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "It was a hard-fought match. They just kept coming back."

The Midshipmen posted its best attack percentage in the opening game, hitting .226 with 13 kills. However, the Mountain Hawks posted 19 kills and a .361 attack percentage in claiming the first game 30-25. Navy responded defensively, limiting host Lehigh to a combined .058 hitting percentage over the final three games in coming back to pick up a four-game victory.

Keying the defensive effort for the Midshipmen was junior Meghan Boyd (Richmond, Va.). Boyd posted six blocks while also registering a .300 hitting percentage with nine kills and chipping in five digs.

"Boyd had a great match defensively for us tonight," stated Schwob. "She was a spark for us, coming in and providing six blocks in her six rotations."

Sophomore Rachel Dougherty (Derwood, Md.) assisted as well in the defensive play, leading the team with eight blocks to go along with eight kills. Freshman Jessie Sims (Etowah, N.C.) joined Musser with a double-double performance, leading the team with 12 kills and 14 digs.

By virtue of Navy's win and Army's 3-0 defeat of Colgate up in West Point, N.Y., earlier tonight, the Midshipmen can clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament tomorrow with a victory at Lafayette (13-12, 3-7 Patriot League). The Saturday afternoon match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
