EVANSTON, Ill. - The Navy squash team earned a pair of wins in its opening weekend of action, sweeping Northwestern and Kenyon Friday evening in Illinois. Dating back to last season, the Mids are 26-7 after turning in a school-record 24 wins in 2004-05.
Four Midshipmen turned in 2-0 records Friday night, including team captain Scott Hackman (McLean, Va.) who opened his senior campaigns with a 3-1 win over Northwestern's Zaid Siddik and a 3-0 sweep against Murtaza Alambur of Kenyon. Sophomore Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) turned in a pair of wins without giving up a game, as did senior Dhruv parashar (Singapore) and hometown hero Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.).
Sophomore William Eucker (Denver, Colo.) extended his unbeaten streak to 10 games, after winning all nine varsity matches as a rookie. He defeated Luke Hammond of Kenyon, 9-1, 9-0, 9-0.
Freshmen Michael John Beautyman Jr. (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), Will Pappas (Philadelphia, Pa.), Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.), along with junior Dan Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) each earned wins in their first varsity matches. Both Smith and Zipf were faced with 0-1 deficits, but regrouped to win three straight and defeat their respective Northwestern foes.
In addition to Navy's two victories, the Midshipmen split a pair of exhibition matches against University Club and Lake Shore Club Saturday. Navy dropped a 10-2 decision to University Club, who was represented by multiple professional players and former standout college players. The Mids took a narrow 7-5 victory away from Lake Shore in the trip finale.
The Midshipmen return to action next weekend when they play the annual Alumni Match Saturday at 8 a.m. and will play host to Franklin & Marshall in an exhibition match Sunday at 12-Noon.
