BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Navy women's swimming team won just one of 13 events as UMBC dealt Navy a 141-96 setback in dual-meet action on Saturday. The loss was Navy's first of the year and drops the Mids' record to 3-1 overall.
Navy's lone victory came from freshman Jennie Spencer (Smithburg, W. Va.), who was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.25, defeating UMBC's Amber Harris by 2.22 seconds. The win was her third straight triumph in the 200-yard backstroke.
"We had a couple of sicknesses, but we had a tough day," said Navy coach John Morrison. "Overall, we fought hard, but UMBC was ready for us. We are in the process of getting ready for our conference meets, as we start that next weekend."
Navy also got second-place finishes from the 400-yard medley relay (4:00.75), freshman Sally Bakewell (St. John's, Fla.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:42.70), sophomore Katie Griffin (Ellicott City, Md.) in the one-meter (254.78) and three-meter (252.00) diving competitions, freshman Erika Hubbard (Madison, Wis.) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.36) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:42.86).
Navy will compete next Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y., in a three-team dual meet against Lehigh and Colgate. Action begins at 2:00 p.m.
