PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Junior Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz.) was the lone Navy representative to win a match at the 2005 Penn Tennis Classic held in Philadelphia over the weekend. Lai posted a 3-1 record to reach the semifinals of the Flight B singles. Stanley Kahl, Johnny Waters and Jason Hill also competed for the Mids in singles play. Lai and Kahl teamed up in doubles play as did Hill and Waters.
Lai reached the semifinals with three impressive victories. He opened the tournament on Friday with a 6-1, 6-2, decision over Temple Zach Tobias. In the round of 16, Lai then defeated Columbia's Jon Chan with a thrilling 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-5, victory. He knocked off Alex Svetlakou of St. John's, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, to reach the semifinals, where he fell to third-seeded Louie-Xavier Lavallee of Maryland, 6-2, 7-6. Lai finishes the fall season with an impressive 12-3 record.
Also in flight B, Stanley Kahl (Richland, Pa.) dropped his first-round match to Manhattan's David Alvarado, 6-2, 6-2. In the A flight, Johnny Waters (Papillion, Neb.) lost to fifth-seeded Diego Alvarado of Manhattan, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 (5), in the first round. Lastly, Jason Hill (Marietta, Ga.) lost his first-round match to Penn's Jimmy Fairbanks, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, the tandem of Hill and Waters dropped its first-round match to Princeton's Morales and Husby, 9-7. The grouping of Lai and Kahl lost to Coleman and Lavallee of Maryland, 8-6, in the first round.
The invite concluded Navy's fall season.
