ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy won both relays and five individual events to post a pair of victories over Brown and Dartmouth, Saturday afternoon in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League opener for the men's swimming and diving team. The Mids posted a 143-100 victory over Brown, as well as a 169-74 win over Dartmouth in Navy's Lejeune Hall.
The two victories improves Navy's record to 8-0 on the season, with Dartmouth falling to 0-4 and Brown improving to 2-1 on the year.
"Going into the meet, knowing we were competing against EISL teams for the first time this season, we knew we would be pushed," said Navy head coach Bill Roberts. "There was good racing going on between all three teams within nearly every heat. With that, I am pleased with what we got out of today's competition."
The opening 400 medley relay went down to the final swimmers in the pool. Kevin Mukri (Jr., Silver Spring, Md.) began the event for Navy by posting a time of 58.51 in the backstroke to give the Mids a nine-tenths of a second lead over Brown. The next swimmer for the Bears, Grant Garcia, completed the breaststroke leg in a time of 1:06.28 to give Brown a 17-hundredth of a second lead over Navy, then Richard Alexander extended the Brown advantage to nearly two seconds (1.95) as he finished the butterfly portion of the event in a time of 56.55.
Mike Linn (Sr., Newhall, Calif.) entered the water to swim the freestyle and sliced the Navy deficit down to just four-tenths of a second after 50 meters, then recorded a time of 27.49 over the final 50 meters to give Navy a 1.2 second victory in the event. The Navy foursome completed the event in a time of 3:54.34, with Brown placing second in a time of 3:55.57.
Brown responded by winning the next four events, but despite the victories the Bears could only take 47-46 lead over the Mids as Navy placed second and third and scored three swimmers in all four events. Navy dominated the sixth event, the one-meter diving, as Kevin Teague (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) posted a score of 302.45 to win the event with Jon Galinski (Fr., Naperville, Ill.) placing second (254.70) and Zach Templin (So., Holt, Mich.) third (249.90) in the dual meet with Brown to give Navy a 62-50 lead over the Bears.
The Bears would win the next event, the 200 butterfly, to narrow the Navy lead down to three points at 67-64, but Navy won five of the final six events of the day to pull away from the Bears.
Joe Smutz (Sr., Marriottsville, Md.) began the Navy run by winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 51.58, then Mukri recorded a two-second victory in the 200 backstroke with a 2:05.63 clocking. Brown's Peter Volosin won the 400 freestyle, but Teague won the three-meter diving with a score of 385.65 and John Kennedy (Jr., Richmond) won the final individual event of the day, the 200 breaststroke, in a time of 2:28.13.
Navy made it a sweep of the relay events by recording a time of 3:30.42 in the 400 free relay to edge Brown by seven-tenths of a second for the victory.
The Midshipmen will return to Lejeune Hall Dec. 1 when Navy plays host to Army. The women's dual between the service academies begins at 3:45 p.m., with the men's meet following at 7:15 p.m.
