COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Two-time defending champion, Navy, had a disappointing performance in Sunday's President's Cup, finishing third out of four teams, in the annual tournament between the four service academies (Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard). The Mids shot a 5726 to finish 91 points behind winner Army and 11 points behind Air Force.
"It was a pretty disappointing day for us," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We did not perform well at all. We have a lot of work to do. We are young and we are showing our lack of experience. We're putting forth the effort, just not making it happen."
The lone bright spot for Kelley was the performance of freshman Lisa Kunzelman (Constantia, N.Y.). Kunzelman claimed air rifle medalist honors with a 585. It was the second week in a row that she has brought home medalist honors.
"I was, however, very pleased with Lisa's performance," said Kelley. "She has performed very well so far this year and is just rolling in confidence. She had an outstanding meet."
Navy will take next weekend off, before shooting against West Virginia, at noon, on Friday, Nov. 18, in Annapolis.
