Baseball Drops 11-2 Decision to UMBC

Annapolis, Md. - The Navy baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision to UMBC Thursday at Max Bishop Stadium.
The Retrievers outhit the Mids 16-7, while running their record to 5-11. The loss for Navy - its 13th in the last 14 games - dropped its mark to 4-16-1.
UMBC starting pitcher Jon Pavlis (2-1) earned his second win of the season by going eight innings and allowing just two runs - none earned - while scattering six hits. He got off to a tremendous start by retiring the first 11 batters he faced before Jared Munde (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) reached via a single in the fourth inning.
"I thought Pavlis threw extremely well," Navy head coach Steve Whitmyer said. "They beat us off the mound. We just didn't get very good pitching today. We walked a bunch of guys and hit a few guys and you can't spot any team runs like that and expect to win."
Tom Rinaldi led UMBC offensively with a 4-for-6 performance at the plate with three runs batted in and a run scored. Alex Laddbush and Steve Russo had three and two hits, respectively.
Senior Doug Silverman (Foster City, Calif.) paced Navy with two hits and a run scored. Classmate Matt Lukevics (Tampa, Fla.) scored the Midshipmen's other run.
Freshman Spencer Suarez (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), making his first start of the season, fell to 0-1 after lasting just two innings and allowing two runs.
Navy will open Patriot League play this weekend as it plays host to Bucknell in a four-game series. Both Saturday's and Sunday's doubleheader will begin at noon at Max Bishop Stadium.
