Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Holy Cross

Worcester, Mass. - The Navy baseball team split its doubleheader with Holy Cross Monday at Granger Field in Worcester, Mass. The Crusaders pulled out a 1-0 win in the first game, but the Mids responded with a 5-3 victory to salvage a split.
Navy improved to 7-21-1 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross improved to 8-10 and 3-1 in league play.
The Midshipmen scored four times over the first three innings of the second game to take a 4-0 advantage. Third baseman Dominic Lopez (Detroit, Mich.) and right fielder Trevor Thompson (Kent, Wash.) each collected two hits, while Thompson scored twice and drove in a run.
Despite out-hitting the Mids, 12-9, the Crusaders could not mount a comeback by stranding eight runners on base.
Navy starting pitcher Ryan Hefner (Creve Coeur, Ill.), making his first start since Feb. 25, versus Missouri, went five innings and yielded just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks to earn his first win of the season (1-1). He lowered his earned run average from 37.80 to 13.11 in the process.
Joe Koessler (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings to earn his first save of the season. Koessler scattered three hits while also issuing no walks.
Holy Cross used a strong performance from starting pitcher Rob Oteri to win the afternoon's first contest. Oteri (1-1) scattered three hits over six scoreless innings and struck out five to earn his first win of the season. Scott Hampe retired the side in the seventh to nail down his fifth save of the season.
The Crusaders pushed the game's lone run across in the fifth inning on Jamie Aldrich's RBI single to right field, scoring Tom Potvin on the play.
Navy's offense failed to compliment the equally strong pitching performance from freshman starter Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.). McCoy lasted six innings and gave up just that run on six hits with six strikeouts. McCoy has struck out 16 batters over his last two starts (12 innings).
McCoy has allowed just five runs and lowered his ERA from 16.80 to 4.50 over his last four starts. However, he is 0-2 with two no decisions, as the Midshipmen have only been able to score six runs in those contests while the relief pitching has failed to hold two leads when he has left.
Navy will be back in action Tuesday as it faces UMBC at The Baseball Factory Field in Baltimore, Md., at 7 p.m.
