ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy baseball team jumped out to an early 3-2 lead, but Coppin State responded with six combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings to claim an 8-5 victory at Max Bishop Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Mids fell to 11-28-1 on the season, while Coppin State improved to 19-28.
It appeared early on that it was going to be an offensive explosion, as the Eagles plated two runs, all with two outs, in the first inning. Navy responded, however, with three in the bottom half of the frame. The Mids opened with four straight hits, with Trevor Thompson (Kent, Wash.) delivering an RBI single to tie the score at 2-2. Thompson then advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to give Navy a 3-2 advantage after one inning.
Both pitchers then settled down as Navy hurler Tom Van Dam (Haworth, N.J.) faced the minimum through the next four innings, and Coppin State's pitcher, Ryan Carroll, faced just one over the minimum in that same time frame.
Coppin State then broke the game open in the sixth, as Graham Johnson drew a leadoff walk and scored on Corey Greene's one-out RBI single to tie the game at three. The Eagles then proceeded to load the bases and Wenger belted a bases-clearing double off the wall for a 6-3 advantage. Navy cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth as Jared Munde (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) singled home Thompson.
However, Coppin State went up 8-4 in its next at-bat as Brian Vickers doubled down the left-field line to plate two runs and an 8-4 cushion. Navy trimmed the margin to 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but could only two baserunners in the final two innings and could get no closer.
Van Dam was saddled with the loss as he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits and three walks. Munde tallied three hits for the Mids, while Dominic Lopez (Detroit, Mich.) and Mitchell Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) had two each. Both teams had 10 hits on the day, and Navy committed one error, while Coppin State had two.
Navy will be in action Wednesday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m., matchup at Georgetown.
