Baseball Drops 3-0 Decision to Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Navy freshman pitcher Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.) struck out 10 Army batters, but it wasn't enough as the Midshipmen fell to the Black Knights, 3-0, in the series opener Saturday at Johnson Stadium.
Both teams completed the seven-inning game before the rains came, which postponed the series' second game until Monday. Army and Navy will continue the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
McCoy pitched a complete game for Navy on the afternoon while issuing just one walk in addition to his season-high strikeout total. He allowed just two earned runs and scattered five hits over six innings of work, as he fell to 2-5 on the season. McCoy threw 100 pitches with 78 of those going for strikes.
His overall record is misleading as he has pitched a team-high 51-and-one-third innings this season while striking out 50 and walking just 13. McCoy has yielded just 24 earned runs for a 4.21 earned-run average.
He has been just as impressive in Patriot League play, despite a 1-3 record. He has struck out 34 batters, while issuing just four walks and posting a 2.12 ERA.
McCoy got rolling early in today's contest, by striking out four of the first seven batters he faced. However, Navy's offense did not lend any support as Army hurler Nick Hill retired the first nine batters he faced.
The Black Knights used an error and a base hit to scratch out two runs in the fourth inning. Schuyler Williamson and Walker Gorham led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Williamson, who went to third on Gorham's base hit, scored two batters later on Jeremy Stache's sacrifice fly to center field. Chris Simmons followed with a grounder that Navy shortstop Dominic Lopez (Detroit, Mich.), who tried the flip to second to start a 6-4-3 double play, but ended up throwing the ball into center field, which allowed Gorham to move to third. Cole White then stepped to the plate and hit a high pop-fly, but fell between three Navy fielders to plate Gorham.
Army pushed another run across in the fifth as Gorham drove in Kyle Scogin on an infield single.
The Mids mustered just two hits, and only four baserunners in the game, with both hits by catcher Jonathan Matthew-Johnston (Hamilton Township, N.J.). Nick Hill earned the win for Army, by going the distance and striking out seven with just one walk.
