Baseball Drops Series Finale to Army in Ninth

Navy-Army, May 2 (Game One)

West Point, N.Y. - Scott Komaromy delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday to pull out a 3-2 win over Navy at Johnson Stadium.

The win for Army completed a four-game series sweep of Navy in the weekend series. The Black Knights improved to 31-10 overall and 17-3 in the Patriot League. Navy fell to 12-32-1 overall and 6-14 in league play.

Burgess Nichols started for Navy and suffered the loss despite going the distance. Nichols fell to 2-6 on the season.

Both starting pitchers got off to solid starts in the game. Army hurler Dan Cappello retired the first nine batters he faced, while Nichols yielded just one hit through the first three innings.

The Midshipmen finally reached Cappello in the fourth as Trevor Thompson (Kent, Wash.) doubled to lead off the frame and Matt Lukevics (Tampa, Fla.) moved him over to third with a single through the left side of the infield. Doug Silverman bounced into a fielder's choice, but it enabled Thompson to come home to give Navy a 1-0 lead.

After allowing a double to Nate Stone in the second inning, Nichols retired the next 10 batters he faced before Chris Simmons and Cole White stroked back-to-back base hits in the fifth. However, Nichols settled down and struck out Jason Meloy swinging to end the threat.

Army tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning on Walker Gorham's RBI double down the line in left field, scoring Schuyler Williamson, who reached on a walk earlier in the frame.

Navy went on top 2-1 in the seventh on Mitch Harris' (Mt. Holly, N.C.) RBI single, which scored Silverman on the play.

Navy will return home to Max Bishop Stadium Tuesday to conclude its 2005 season by playing host to George Mason at 3 p.m.
