Baseball Drops Season Finale to George Mason

Annapolis, Md. - The Navy baseball team dropped its 2005 season finale to George Mason Tuesday, as the Colonials pushed two runs across in the ninth inning for a 4-2 victory at Max Bishop Stadium.
George Mason improved to 27-15 on the season, while Navy concluded its campaign with a 12-33-1 record.
The game marked the final collegiate contest for five Navy seniors, including captain Trevor Thompson (Kent, Wash.), Jeff Lange (Springfield, Va.), Doug Silverman (Foster City, Calif.), Tom Van Dam (Haworth, N.J.) and Matt Lukevics (Tampa, Fla.).
"Our five seniors all had great careers here on and off the field," Navy head coach Steve Whitmyer said. "I know that all of them will be very successful as officers in the Navy. They all are highly respected by their teammates and are great leaders."
With the score tied 2-2 heading into the ninth, George Mason mounted its rally with two outs. Matt Cooksey reached base as he was hit by a Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) pitch and moved to second on a stolen base. Matt York followed at the plate and drove in Cooksey with a single down the right field line. Joe Koessler (Knoxville, Tenn.) then came on to pitch and was greeted by consecutive singles from Chris Looze and Adam Innerst. Innerst's base hit drove in York for the frame's final run.
Josh Morrison started for George Mason and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the win and run his record to 5-2 this season.
Harris suffered the loss and fell to 0-3 on the season. Harris and five other pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in the game. Navy pitchers registered 42 strikeouts and just nine walks in its last five games of the campaign.
The Midshipmen went on top 1-0 in the second inning on Ryan McGinn's (Arvada, Col.) RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Jonathan-Matthew Johnston (Hamilton Township, N.J.), who singled earlier in the frame.
Mason tied it at 1-1 in the fourth, but Navy responded in the bottom half of the inning with a D.J. Faldowski (Washington, Pa.) RBI single. The Colonials tied it at 2-2 in the seventh as York drove in a run with a groundout to second base.
