CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Brandon Carter (West Chester, Pa.) led a strong Navy contingent at the UNC Invite with a fourth-place finish in the red singles flight. Carter posted a 2-2 record, falling in yesterday's semifinals. Five other singles players and one doubles team placed in the competition.
In the blue flight of the singles competition, freshman Nate Nelms (St. Mary's, Ga.) posted a 3-1 record. Nelms won in the opening round, 6-4, 7-5, over Wofford's Chris Barlow. Nelms then fell in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0, to Sebastian Guejman of North Carolina, but rebounded to defeat Ricardo Barone of East Carolina, 6-2, 6-4, and Stuart Lynas of Charlotte, 8-2.
In the white flight of singles, Freshman Jason Hill (Atlanta, Ga.) posted a 2-2 mark during the tournament. Hill lost in the opener to North Carolina's David Stone, 7-6 (2), 6-1, but rebounded to knock off High Point's Bobby Brooke, 7-5, 6-2. Hill also defeated Davidson's Daniel Bermeo, 6-4, 7-6 (9). Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz.) also competed in the white flight, posting a 1-2 mark.
Carter excelled in the red flight, knocking off Wofford's Scott Collins, 6-2, 6-4, in round one. Carter advanced to the semifinals on Saturday, defeating Richmond's Michael Sommer, 7-5, 6-4. Eventual champion, Lenny Gullen of North Carolina topped Carter, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals, but Carter responded with an 8-5 victory over UNC's Sandeep Daiya in the consolation finals. Stanley Kahl (Richland, Pa.) also competed in the red flight, going 1-2 with a 6-3, 6-0, victory over Sommer.
In the yellow flight, freshman Johnny Waters (Papillion, Neb.) was 2-2 with victories over Davidson's Scott Myers and Richmond's Brett Waikert. Alex James (Visalia, Calif.) also competed in the yellow flight, posting a 1-3 record with the victory coming against Campbell's Ryan Mills.
Lastly, Kyle Jones (Canton, Ohio) was 3-1 in the green singles, with straight-set triumphs in all three of his matches.
The doubles tandem of Hill and Waters went 0-2 in the "A" flight doubles, falling to the eventual champion pairing, Gullan and Stone of North Carolina, in the opening round.
In the "B" flight, Stanley Kahl and Adrian Lai had the most success with a 2-1 record. They won their final two matches by 8-1 and 8-6 scores, respectively, over a Wofford and Richmond doubles team. Carter and Nelms also competed in the "B" flight, posting a 1-1 record, reaching the quarterfinals.
In round-robin doubles, Alex James and Kyle Jones went 1-1, earning a victory over Guzman and Werk of Charlotte, 9-8 (5).
Navy will be in action next during the weekend of Oct. 14-16 at the Old Dominion Invitational in Norfolk, Va.
