BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Navy volleyball team split of pair of matches Saturday, defeating UMES in three games and losing in five games to Canisius in Buffalo. The Mids move to 2-1 on the season and will next play Tuesday night at Howard.
"It was a good start to the season," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "It was disappointing to not have been able to pull out the last game against Canisius, but we played hard in all eight games today and put ourselves in good position to win."
Navy picked up a 30-20, 30-23, 30-25 victory over UMES to begin the day. Beth McArthur (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, Jessie Sims (Fr., Etowah, N.C.) hauled in 19 digs, Megan Boyd (Richmond, Va.) tallied 10 kills and eight blocks) and Megan Vehovic (Sr., Clymer, Pa.) dropped in five service aces.
Navy outhit the Lady Hawks, .215-.031, hauled in an additional 19 digs (66-47) and notched 11 blocks to five for UMES.
In the second match, the Golden Griffins did not commit a hitting error in the decisive game five to pull out a 20-30, 30-28, 32-30, 22-30, 15-10 victory over the Mids.
McArthur again led Navy in kills with 25, while also hitting .575 and hauling in 17 digs. Sims recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, as did Ashley Musser (Sr., Industry, Pa.) with 33 assists and 14 kills, while also adding six service aces.
Navy hit just .111 in the fifth game -- seven kills, five errors, 18 attempts -- while Canisius tallied a .667 hitting percentage with eight kills and zero errors on 12 swings.
