NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 13th-ranked Navy squash team rounded out competition at the Yale Round Robin with a 6-3 win over No. 16 Colby Sunday in New Haven, Conn. The Mids turned in a 3-2 record for the week, including a 2-2 record in round robin action.
Navy won four of its six matches in three games with the most exciting match at No. 6. Navy freshman Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) found himself down 2-0 to Colby senior Sam Weeks, but Zipf was able to regroup and win the final three games of the match, 9-7, 9-4, 9-2.
Sophomore Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) found himself in a similar position against Brett Willis at the No. 8 spot, but dropped the fifth and deciding game.
Another standout freshman, Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.), needed an extra game to seal the win over Colby co-captain Todd Basnight. Smith dropped the opening game, 9-5, before claiming three-straight wins to post the victory.
Navy earned wins by Tucker George (West Hartford) (3-0), Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) (3-0), Scott Hackman (McLean, Va.) (3-0) and Dhruv parashar (Singapore) (3-0).
The Midshipmen return to action Saturday when they play host to fourth-ranked Yale at 10 a.m. The following day, Navy will head to Haverford, Pa., the hometown of Jeff Sawin, to face Tufts and Haverford.
