Navy Rifle Continues Improvement With a Rout of USP

Jan. 28, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- One day after setting a new school record, the Navy rifle team followed up with another strong performance, outscoring the University of the Sciences, 4666-4371, on Saturday afternoon to improve to 7-1 overall. The Mids finished the weekend with their two highest scores of the season after shooting a 4674 yesterday.

"It was a very good way to back up our performance yesterday," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "I was worried a little bit about a letdown, but they came out and shot very well again today. We had a very strong weekend."

Navy fired a 2337 in air rifle and a 2329 in smallbore to account for its 4666. In air rifle, Lisa Kunzelman (Constantia, N.Y.) led the Mids with a 591. Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C.) followed with a 590, Josh Albright (Shelton, Conn.) added a 583 and Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C.) rounded out Navy's scoring with a 573. In smallbore, Schneider led Navy with a 587, Albright compiled a 585, Kunzelman tallied a 580 and Christina Schade (Eagle River, Alaska) scored a 577.

"Hopefully, this will be the start of us stringing some success together," said Kelley. "We have a big month coming up in our push to make the NCAA Tournament, starting with a qualifying meet on Feb. 12, and our match with Army. We are getting into the stretch run of the season and, hopefully, we can continue to improve."

Navy will host the NCAA Qualifying meet on Feb. 12 against John Jay at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
